D’awwwwww!
You know, I’ve got this little buffer, it might help if I remember before the last minute to queue them up to update. Pokémon Black has been way too addicting. Speaking of Pokémon, how many people have some Pokémon games and would be up for a day of battles? I’m thinking about maybe setting up some day on a weekend for a few hours where Ginger will be on wifi in HeartGold and Black (half in one, half in the other so people who just have Gen IV still can get involved) to battle with people. Her HG team is in the 60′s, her Black team, well, if we work something out, we’ll see how strong it is then. I just mention the levels because it’s a better battle if the levels are closer. Might set up some kind of trade thing too… Throw in some suggestions in the comments or a Facebook Discussion Thread. I’ll do a proper blog post with full details if/when we decide to do it, we’ll gather friend codes there, right now just gathering thoughts.
Thanks to all spreading the word about being back, please keep it up! And thank you for reading!

BEST PET EVER
When do Black and White let you trade up your team from generation 4? I want to import my guys from Platinum and never use the new Pokémon again.
Per usual when it comes to bringing pokémon from a previous generation, you need to get the National Pokédex (complete the story/beat Elite Four).
Pidove, Blitzle, Munna, and the Snivy line aren’t so bad (I’ve only got to the second gym… I have Tympole and Throh on my team as well, but I think I may just box them). I just wish I could get me an Eevee. …Or, better yet, an Eeveelution team.
Yeah, I actually like some of these new Pokémon. It’s definitely harder to build a team when you’re not running into familiar tried-and-true faces, but that’s the point of a new region and new game.
Speaking of Pokemon:
Kilgore, above
Musharna: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Musharna_(Pok%C3%A9mon)
COINCIDENCE?!
When I first started playing Platinum, I knew pretty much everything that could be researched. I promised that I wasn’t going to do that with Black and White. So I actually know very little about how I’m going to go about beating the Elite Four and whatnot.
I do, however, know about Contrary + Leaf Storm of Serperior. How much do you want to bet that Serperior gets put into Ubers simply because of how horribly broken that combination is? Ninjask leads and Baton Passes his speed boosts to Serperior, and it’s going for a +6 sp atk with a 210 effective base power. Even type combos like Skarmory (1/4) will have trouble taking the 210 effective base power with 4x sp atk (essentially like a 210 base power attack vs neutral). Sap Sippers are the only ones that could REALLY stand up, and Hidden Power Fighting would take care of that real quick (even if it’s only +2 or +4 boosted, that would be a very nice chunk, especially since most Sap Sippers are normal-type). Other HPs are possible (Rock would take care of most fliers trying to get in one or two attacks rather nicely and, IIRC, is not resisted by any Sap Sippers). Green Gem would allow it to get a nice boost to its first Leaf Storm so that it can still deal a good chunk on its first attack.
Shame you can’t get a Snivy starter with Contrary (Dream World ability).
Totally a coincidence! It’s just a common sleeping position and a dream Pokémon would be designed around it.
As for the ability/uber stuff? Totally not my area. Like I’ve said, I’m more Poké Prof than Battler. I love the collecting and the story stuff. My online research tends to be more “Where to find x?” than “Who am I battling?” so the Gym Leaders and the Elite Four and all the story stuff, I like to discover on my own. And the where-to-find stuff tends to come AFTER I complete the story just to preserve it.
i think what the developers did with bianca’s dad is pretty funny.
for those who don’t have the game, he’s basically saying, “are you crazy? i’m not letting my daughter who knows nothing about taking care of herself go out on a pokemon journey!”
people have long wondered what all these parents are thinking, sending their kids out alone in control of dangerous monsters. now the developers gave this question a voice in the game, and he gets written off as just being ‘overprotective’.
This game is definitely the most “Meta” of all pokémon games, delving into some questions people have had about the series since the start (See this Penny Arcade for more insight – http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/3/7/). As for the going on a journey thing, that’s probably one of the reasons the protagonists are a little older this game than previous ones as well. 10 years old (in the previous games) is a bit ridiculous.
Current White Team lvl Range: 30 – 44. 44 Emboar, 39 Elektrik, 37 Seismitoad, 35 Stoutland, 34 Zebstrika, and 30 Liepard. …Not very well put together and evenly distributed… I blame that nearly every Gym, my Emboar has had at least one super-effective move with which to sponge all the XP ^^;
But definately willing to pit my rag-tag team against Ginger’s. Or scrape together a good team from all the pokemon I have stored up in Soul Silver, waiting to be transferred.
I’m kind of hoping any B/W battles will just use B/W Pokémon, set people up with teams they aren’t QUITE as used to. That’s another reason I’m offering up Gen IV battles too.
Right. I meant for use in a gen IV battle. not the gen V one
I’m kinda getting used to the new ones. granted, the lack of cool fire types (Victini is basically the only one I like until I get to Victory Road), but I’ve got a pretty solid team anyway; Dewott, Blitzle, Throh, Victini, Drilbur, and, for now, Purrloin. Once I’ve got them a little more leveled, they’ll be a FTBRW.
if i know my luck right your wi fi time will be while im on schoolXC
and the toy shop near me have yet to get white!!! stupid shop people ordering lateY-Y
but when i do get white imma play so much that i will get high lv pokemon fast to battle chu on gen5. and then own your butt in HGXD
seriously, im going to transfer all the pokemon i have from D and the two HG i have. but the fact that we CAN NOT TRANSFER HOLD ITEMS are pure bullocks….and i got like alot of pokemon to transfer when i get white and national so my pc boxes will become extremely fullXD
but the two first pokemon im going to transfer= Arceus and Celebi:3 yay for events.
Also Carl i got a new Email with the same name as this profile. ill Email you the Skype account name and then maybe we can talk sometime. would be fun.
wow long comment is longX-x
Event Celebi can transfer early! When you get to Castelia City, go into the house to the left of the northern exit, go to the second floor and give the man these 4 phrases: Everyone Happy Simple Connection
After that, save, resart from title screen, activate Relocator and it takes any event pokemon that it recognizes on another DS, and sends them over. They wind up in your PC boxes if your party is full. No need to pick them up special from a delivery guy.
So can the event Legendary Beasts!
I’ll keep an eye out for the e-mail.
I was thinking a weekend for the Pokéday. And the lack of Gen V owning is why I’m making Gen IV part of it!
sent email. totally forgot about it
and now it seems like the local toy shop have YET TO GAIN B/W WHEN THEY ORDERED IT FRIDAY!!!!
I NEED WHITE!!!!!
Been reading this for a while now. One of my favorite comics out there, keep up the great work. Decided to post now because I was a huge fan of the original Pokemon Red/Blue back in the day and I’ve been debating getting black (and/or white) but have a question. I pretty much fell out of the loop after the original pair and didn’t play any until diamond and pearl. I played diamond for a while, but never bothered to finish it when I found out that you could only get some of the Pokemon by attending ‘events’ and other things. This really turned me off to it because, while completing the story line is cool and all, what I really like is obtaining a complete collection. Making it so that I pretty much have no way of obtaining some of them was like a slap to the face. (I’m not one to go to Pokemon events, kind of a closet fan if you will.)
And finally on to my question. Are all of the Pokemon in black and white obtainable with just the games? Or will people still have to go to events to get certain ones?
Some are only obtainable through events still, in fact, some you needed to get Event Pokémon from Gen IV. Here’s the thing though: With their Wifi connection, you are able to get most Pokémon through trading online. Granted the Global Terminal has it’s limits – You can only ask for Pokémon you’ve seen. And some event Pokémon you can’t get through the Global Terminal (due to Cherish Ball) but you’ll be able to get most through that. Then you can also find a few online chat rooms, like at seribii.net, where you can state you’re looking for ____, maybe even just for a trade back so you can get the data for the pokédex (and as a closest fan, you can be anonymous, it being the Internet and all). I completed my Pearl dex with some of that. The possible Pokémon day should have some trading stuff going on.
Another thing with some events is that they’re over Wi-fi connection. For example, for about a month here, if you get Black/White, you can get Victini through an event that basically only requires that you access Wi-Fi Connection and download the Liberty Pass. Some events, like picking up a pokémon from Gamestop, you can actually just do from your car if you’re close enough to the store.
The thing with Pokémon is that it’s kind of a social game, so being a closet fan makes it more difficult to complete the dex. It’s still possible with all the online trading and stuff, it just takes more work. But again, maybe having a PokéDay amongst readers might help with trading needs.
Talking of Pokemon questions, I wonder if they’ll ever answer mine. As far as I can tell, the only life forms in the TV series (haven’t tried the games) are humans, pokemon and plants, right? So the question is, are they all vegetarians or do they kill pokemon for food?
They answered that one, slyly, in Gold/Silver – If you played it, remember Team Rocket kidnapping a bunch of Slowpokes for their tails? One of the Rocket Gunts mentions that Slowpoke tails are a delicacy. This provides the first evidence that there is actual consumption of Pokémon, at least within the games. But, unlike some of the other meta issues B/W has addressed, since so many people look at Pokémon almost like pet (and in the anime, Pokémon behave basically like people), they haven’t really delved into the subject matter. Aside from a few Pokédex entries about eating food FROM Pokémon (like Bananas from a Tropius). Although if people are eating Chansey eggs (it’s in some pokédex entries!), then the idea of eating a full grown Pokémon can’t be too much further removed. (It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the anime, but they do occasionally show meat being eaten… with no explanation of where it came from. Although Ash DID catch a herd of Tauros years ago…)
Wasn’t that the episode where he had a gun pulled on him? And someone dressed like Hitler?
I don’t remember the Hitler bit. I do know it was never aired in the U.S. because of the gun bit though. And so the next episode when Ash suddenly had a bunch of Tauros confused the hell out of a lot of people.
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Farfetch%27d#Pokédex_entries
There’s this one in the anime.
On the issue of Chansey: Chansey eggs, for some odd reason, seem specifically designed for eating (they’re different than the eggs you get from a Chansey that hatch).
I also believe Ash and co. have been seen eating unknown meats in the anime.
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pokémon_world#Pokémon_as_food
That last part reminds me of Thor and his goats or whatever they were.
Following up on that, you could look at – http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Food#Eating_other_Pokémon and below that Food Production. So at the very least, it seems they’re not Vegan. (And yeah, like we’ve said, unknown meats are shown to be eaten)
See, my problem with Black is that it seems like they decided “Hey let’s just START OVER!” Pidgey? now Pidove. Rattata? now Patrat. Drowsee? now Munna( two pokemon canNOT hold the title of dream eater, sorry) It irritates me for some reason.
So this is how crazy I am: I’ve developed an explanation for this. I’m much more a Pokémon Prof-type than a Gym Leader-type.
So using the Nacrene City museum and many of the Unovian Pokémon that are similar to the Kanto et al. regions, it can be argued that the Unova region presents an example of adaptation in a way. In the Nacrene City museum, they refer to a Dragonite skeleton and Cubone/Marowak bones as ancient Pokémon. Now, there’s no evidence to suggest this game is millions of years in the future (Especially since NPCs mention Kanto/Sinnoh and the Team Rocket member from the Power Plant at the end of Heart Gold lives in Icirrus City), so if these fossils are from Unova, then there was likely at one point many of the Kanto species living in the region.
Remembering your Darwin and his trip to the Galapagos Islands, the same species separated will adapt into differing species over time. With the distance between Unova and Kanto, given enough time these very similar species would eventually become distinct. (Especially given that a single member “evolves” sometimes several times throughout the course of a single lifetime.) So, for one example, Tauroses in the Unova region became Bouffalants. I could probably expand further on some of this, but I’ve exposed too much crazy as it is.
All that “In-world” explanation aside, I don’t mind the “repeat” of pokémon. They do it every game anyway. This time it was just wider spread. And it’s welcomed, I think, because I now don’t have to worry about “Oh good. ANOTHER cave. That means Geodudes and Zubats. Maybe a Machop.” I get to see and be annoyed by something ELSE. And because you can bring in all the former species, there is still various stat and move differences between them.
I GOT WHITE!!!!!
and second gym leader is annoying
She is annoying, but at the same time the most awesome of all gym leaders.
She’s less annoying than Clay when you get up to him. *shakes fist at over-powered Excadrill*
