It was mentioned in passing with all the talking Daniel was doing last time he was around. The street/area that they’re renting the store on/in is fairly run down, thus Daniel’s ease in affording the better part of it. In an attempt to bring business back to the area, he’s doing a lot of building renovations and restoring the area. The idea that putting a lot of money into cleaning up and repairing the area will bring people back to it.
I’ve been trying to figure out a way to explain the whole thing more deeply in the comic, but as you can see, it doesn’t exactly make for invigorating story telling. (Although I find a lot of the stuff interesting, thus my spending so much time thinking about it. I suppose if I can’t make it work comic wise, I’ll write up some kind of “Daniel Explains it All” bonus content when I have time and if people are interested.)
just look around portland oregon. this has been going on for a while. not only restoring but re greening our neighborhoods and getting the communities back together. Crime, violence and such go down when you have folks back out on the street.
downside is the property values go up so those on marginal income can be forced out. every thing has a good and a bad side. sneaky good side is that the restorations hit a balance point and the places settle back down to affordable property values. in a few years we will see this happening more but for now there is only a couple case studies.
That’s part of the idea behind it. It’s building on the ideas of the Broken Windows Theory, a famous example being the major drop in crime in New York City in the 90′s. Daniel himself is doing some modifications on the concept, and is really just working on the area he bought with the hope what good it does spreads. Again, there’s more details that I would love to get into, but I really should be drawing comics right now. I am glad to hear that the same concept is being put to practice with some pretty promising results (even with the bad side which is something Daniel is trying to avoid. Maybe I’ll be able to work that into the comic in the future when it’s more likely to be reflected in the results of his experiment).
I don't comment enough to create an actual username
