I missed last week’s, I didn’t want to miss this week’s too. This weekend I’ll post why my schedule has been so wild lately. Anyways, this week’s follows!
This week, in celebration of the return of Joe & Monkey, we’ll do some (3) of Boxcar Comics.
Joe and Monkey – By Zach Miller and updating Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Joe and Monkey is back after about a year hiatus and it’s good to have it back. We’re getting a year long story involving time travel from the looks of it! The art work is clean and wonderful and the strips are clever. I look forward to having this strip updating again! Zach tweets on Twitter @joeandmonkey.
Joe Loves Crappy Movies – By Joe Dunn, it updates… well, lately, when he has time. It’s usually weekly like his comic Matriculated and Another Video Game Webcomic and, well, he’s doing several comics weekly at Digital Pimp, so you’re going to get an update of something. Maybe I should have just made the link to Digital Pimp… So yea, Joe Loves Crappy Movies, he goes to the theater, he watches these movies, he comes home and makes a comic for you, posting a review with it. And he’s part of Triple Feature, the movie discussion podcast with Gordon of Multiplex and Tom of Theater Hopper. And as if this one didn’t have enough links, Joe’s Twitter is @joedunn721.
Rob & Elliot – By brothers Clay and Hampton Yount and updating Mondays. These are some funny guys (Hampton does stand up) which is why Rob and Elliot is a funny comic. It often uses the tactic of random or unexpected twist and uses it well. It’s not all random, mind you. There are occasional story arcs. There’s even a bit of a love story that pops up occasionally. There’s also iMonkey. But, as far as I know, the brothers don’t have Twitter.
In the more classy version of the situation in movies and TV, there’s a sullen moment then a cut to a tasteful sex scene with something like Iron & Wine or Death Cab for Cutie playing.
Another version would have the same first panel then cut to them in bed smoking after the sex.
Hey-oh, some drama. I guess that was implicit with their being a flashback about why Ryan hates his dad.
Buh… yea… Sorry. Today and this week didn’t agree with it.
I would have had some backgrounds there but the comic was late was it was…
Mrs. Day? What the? Isn’t Ryan’s last name Page? Yea, that will be explained soon.
Man, looks like Ryan needed a haircut back then…
Also, the Metails are the most important part of any story.
“Oh man, here’s a great story about Steve. See, Steve was going to the store. By the way, while this was going on, I was at home having a good lunch. There was a sandwich made of….”
Let’s jump right in with them, shall we?
Dawn of Time – Michael Stearns updates on Monday-Wednesday-Friday. It takes place ONE HUNDRED MILLION YEARS AGO. It’s got Dawn, the main character cave-women, and her Triceratops, Blue, and Mantell, the 19th century scientist who is stuck in the pass. And they travel around, just having a good time. Also, it may not be historically accurate. OR IT COULD BE! When looking at stuff for this write-up, I saw that Dawn of Time turned 1 yesterday. Awesome sauce! I don’t think Michael has a twitter.
Least I Could Do and Looking For Group – Super team Ryan Sohmer and Lar DeSouza get 9 comics up each week. Least I Could Do (LICD) is daily while Looking for Group (LFG) updates Monday and Thursday. With LICD, it’s a lot about Rayne Summers, who has sex. A lot. (Comic may not be suitable for children… or prudes.) Also about his family and friends. It gets a little weird at times, like Baboon Season… LFG, meanwhile, is a fantasy epic. Ryan does a great job writing and Lar is an amazing artist. (Who, you can tell, loves drawing the ladies.) To Twitter! There you can follow Ryan @sohmer, Lar at @lartist, and because you can, their webmaster Ryan McCahan @rzebram.
Weesh. – M-W-F (with bonus for subscribers on the weekends) by Dan Hess! Hey, we’re back to kid-friendly! Also, another comic that turned a year old this week! Weesh is about some kids and Weesh, who is only visible to kids and can grant wishes, although they are short termed. It’s a cute series and gets pretty wacky. I’ve been meaning to short Dan an e-mail as I didn’t know about this comic until recently yet read for it’s run a previous comic of his called Angel Moxie, which was basically a magical girl parody. So I think I’ll go send that e-mail… Oh, and you can follow Dan on twitter – @dansaysstuff.
Another birthday, although he’s already been featured on #FollowFriday – The Fancy Adventures of Jack Canon, by friend of the comic Jamie Anderson, turned a year old last Friday and we somehow missed it. If you don’t read it, you should.
Holy Shit! 100 comics?!
…
Yea, not as impressive as it use to be, I admit, but I’m proud of it. I’m going to take some time today to reflect on how I’ve improved, where I’m head, and all that after 100 strips and I look forward to the next 100 and beyond.
I want to thank you kind folks for reading. I hope you get as much entertainment from the comic as I do. Thanks again and I hope you keep spreading the word about the comic.
As for what’s going on in this strip… Oh look, I think next week might have a hint of back story.
Okay, so one of those lines is modified (I left out “I can see that now”) and some of the lines are from the second movie… but I loves me my Jurassic Park. And I know at least one other person will enjoy this comic.
In this world, Kilgore Trout is more than just a character in Kurt Vonngeut books. His books are also slightly easier to find than in Vonnegut’s books. (Also, this Kilgore Trout is Vonnegut’s Trout, not Farmer using the pen name.)
Thinking about it, hipster culture would probably be the reason Trout’s books are easier to find. The crazy sci-fi writings of Trout would certainly attract the attention of a certain class of hipster and some publisher or another would look to bank on that. Kelly probably came upon his books by chance because of that. It looks like Ginger wasn’t impressed by the writing.
As for Ting-a-ling, it’s Trout’s repeated line in Timequake.
First things first, comic went up middle of the day because yesterday, July 12, 2009, I was at a wedding. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jeremy Smith!
Now, let’s read the comic. Hey-o! They’re back in that coffee shop from the first couple of strips.
The hedgehog’s name wasn’t brought up before because Kelly hadn’t named him yet and Ginger hadn’t asked because she just assumed hedgehog = Sonic.
And finally – as you can see I’m tweaking some drawing stylings after getting some constructive criticisms and then talking to Jamie about how I should address them. Thanks Jamie! We’ll play with the artistic tweaks this week and see what people think.
Another week, another batch o’ comics for you to check out!
Evil Inc. – Updated six times a week by the very very funny Brad Guigar. This comic alone is reason enough for you to read. Brad is a pun master. He also does Courting Disaster (on Fridays) and is the main force over at Webcomics.com, the Halfpixel crew’s project. Yep, he’s the third member of Halfpixel we’re following in these posts. Guigar can be followed on twitter at @Guigar.
GastroPhobia – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by David McGuire. Welcome to Ancient Greece and the adventures of a warrior woman and her poet son! Also, they have a slave named Klepto. The historical accuracy of this comic may not be very good, but I wasn’t there, I can’t prove otherwise! David is @peprally on the Twitter.
White Ninja – Again M-W-F, this is done by a couple of Canadians (S.Bevan & K.Earle). Simply made, it’s odd humor is extremely enjoyable. If you like odd humor. Which I sometimes do. I mean, there’s not much else I can say about it other than there’s a ninja in white. If you see a plot in the comic, you’re a liar. White Ninja tweets @whiteninjas.
Shop smart. Shop S-Mart.
Just a quick random aside – Japan, care to explain? Because I have no idea.
In case you get bit by a hedgehog, here is some advice. We like to educate and entertain here!
I really like drawing the hedgehog. I will get better at doing so, causing me to enjoy drawing it even more.
Hey hey! It’s Follow Friday, once again! Let’s grab three more comics from the list!
Hark! A Vagrant!: Comics by Kate Beaton that update on no set schedule. Comics about history! So you’ll learn something while experiencing entertainment! I mean, what’s not to love about historical figures and situations being re-examined in humorous comic form? If you go to the history books, you’ll see that Kate has a twitter account @beatonna.
The Intrepid Girlbot: On M-W-F from Diana Nock, you can read the adventures of girlbot, who I hear, is intrepid. A beautiful comic with no dialogue, that so far, has been a lot of cruelty to a raccoon. There’s only 50+ comics at the time of writing, so it’s a young strip and one I’m really anxious to see where it goes. Other work by Diana can be found from her hubsite Jinxville and she can be followed on twitter @jinxville.
Something Positive: Which updates pretty close to daily, it’s the work of Randal Milholland. Not only is Something Positive on the site, but a few other random comic projects he does as well. There is occasionally some positive thing in the comic, but a lot of times, the characters have to put up with a lot of shit. Most of which is combated with glorious wit. You can follow Randy’s positive tweets at @choochoobear.
Ya know, I was recently told I made depressing comics. I think that’s a slight exaggeration.
Sure, the clouds are gray in this one, but there’s been a lot of rain this year! It’s realistic! Or something.
Based off a real conversation with a fellow named Greg.
Buh, this comic was a little rushed so it’s a notch below what I’d have liked on quality. Still, it’s better than some stuff I’ve drawn in the past.
Guess who those two are based off of?
Also: Exposition, exposition, exposition, exposition. It makes a certain kind of sense though – This way Ginger knows how confident these two are about the business plan they helped her make up.
